Full report is forth coming.  Congratulations to Surge Vanderhorst and team.  Surge sailed with Skip Dieball and at times they had their kids on the boat.  Scott and Rick Savage tied for first place and on a tie-breaker finished second.  Kevin Bradley with crew mom and dad (Betsy and Bob) finished third.  Top three boats where family teams!

Too many family boats to list, but I certainly want to apologize to the Evans Team.  I plowed into their boat near the finish of race 5.  I hope I never make that stupid mistake again.

Midwinters 2013 Day 3 (Final) Report

Well by now everyone is home from a fantastic 2013 Interlake Midwinters.  The Interlake Class wishes to thank Pat Crump, Regatta Chair, Davis Island Yacht Club, DIYC staff and the Fireballs for hosting such a great event and opening up their club to us.  This was the 48th consecutive running of Fireball and Friends!  If you didn’t make it this year, plan on going next time.  The sailing was great.  What was even better was hanging out at the beautiful Davis Island Yacht Club with great friends in the warm weather.  All three visible

A special thanks to Lisa Aspery who took care of things on shore and was also our onsite photographer.  Special recognition also goes out to Tom Humphrey.  Tom put a lot of time and effort into putting a proposal together to ask the ISCA Board of Directors for a special limited exemption to permit a basic GPS tracker (records data only and no display of any kind) for each boat.  The Board approved his proposal for Midwinters and Chiefs only.  The next Intercom will have an article further explaining the GPS trackers.  Here is a link to some of the racing. http://tacktracker.com/cloud/home/twhumphrey

Congratulations to Steve Aspery (Interlake #1402) as our 2013 Midwinter’s Champion.  Steve sailed with his daughter, Melisse Aspery, and Jeff Tyndall.  Steve and crew put on a clinic on the race course.

Bill Sanderson sailed with his daughter, Cara Sanderson Bown, and Denny Osborn.  Bill and team sailed very well in their brand new Interlake #1433 from Customflex.  The farthest traveled award goes to Louis Rodriguez who came from Traverse City, Michigan.  Tom Humphrey traveling in a “house on wheels” get the traveling in style award.  The below gallery contains a few pictures and will grow as I upload more to the website.

Midwinters Day 2 Report

Midwinters day 2.  Before discussing the racing results thus far I thought I would recap the best non racing activities.  On Thursday night thanks to Jim Milliman recommendation we all went out to eat at a fantastic Cuban Restaurant.  Then on Friday we had great pizza in downtown Tampa.  At the club the beer has been super cold, the pool is great, we have had dolphins swim along side our boats and just had .  Jeff Tyndall is the man.  So many stories etc..  Next midwinters in Tampa needs to be on your list!!!

So the racing today was fun if you like sunshine and 75 degrees and wind.  We had four races today.  Steve Aspery had four bullets today and has a commanding lead in the overall series.  Bill Sanderson is in second place and has finished second or third in every race.  Bill is sailing fast and very consistent in his new boat (1433).  Mike McClinchie is in third with Ron Gall and Jim Milliman in striking distance.  Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for 15 knots!!

Midwinters 2013 Day 1 Report

We had a great first day of racing at the Interlake Midwinters 2013.  We apart of Fireball and Friends and very appreciative that the Fireballs invited us and the gracious southern hospitality provided at Davis Island Yacht Club.  Their was not a cloud in the sky all day long the sea breeze filled in nicely as the day progressed.

diyc-ariel

We got three races in today.  The first race was out of the south under very light conditions.  Steve Aspery got to a lead and managed to run wire to wire in first place.  Ron Gall finished second and Bill Sanderson finished third.  The wind clocked to the right and the second race had the windward mark set at 265.  This race had some lead changes in the end Steve Aspery finished on top.  Ron Gall was close behind in second and again Bill Sanderson got third.  In the final race the sea breeze had moved a little further right and had the highest winds of the day.   The wind speed averaged about 10-12 mph with minimal chop.  Again Steve Aspery finished first and Bill Sanderson in second and Mike McClinchie in third.

Saturday will have lots of sunshine, and likely some tricky wind conditions.  At some point the predicted east wind will fight with the sea breeze so we could race in the late morning with a nice east breeze, before the wind machine goes flat before the sea breeze kicks in.

Please check back the next two days and we have a high tech surprise in store for the next two days!

Poltergeist 2012 Results

Final Scores

Eleven Interlakes from seven clubs enjoyed a great weekend of fall sailing as the 2012 edition of the Poltergeist Regatta was held once again on the first weekend in October.  The Poltergeist made his presence known by providing us with cloudy skies and cool temperatures both days.  It was in the low 50s on Saturday and the low 40s on Sunday morning.  However, the close racing kept the competitors warm throughout the day.  The breezes on Saturday were out of the west in the low teens, with a similar westerly direction on Sunday at about 6-8 mph.

PRO, Paul White, set up two lap windward-leeward courses.  He used as much of the north end of the lake as possible.  As the breezes blew over the trees, it caused the wind to shift as much as twenty degrees either direction of the centerline of the course.  Therefore, one’s lead over their fellow competitors was never safe; making for some very fun racing.  The only exception to this was Team Aspery (Steve & Lisa Aspery with Jamie Jones), who won four of the five races on Saturday.  Their other race was a second place finish.

After the five races on Saturday places third (3rd) though ninth (9th) were only separated by nine points (Team Dieball had 27 points, Team McClinchie had 28 points, Team Bradley had 29 points, both Team Chapin and Team J.A.W.S had 30 points, Team Sanderson had 33 points and Team R had 36 points).  All of these teams trailed second place Team Savage who had 16 points.

Fleet #28 all pitched in to serve our traditional State Fair Pork Chop dinner and desert. I heard there are those who come to this regatta just for the dinner.  ISCA Class Past President, Mike McClinchie, then presented those in attendance with a class update after dinner.

The Sunday morning racing was as close as the Saturday racing.  However, Sunday morning saw a new leader emerge, that being Team Dieball winning both races followed by Team Aspery.  The other competitors each seemed to have one good race and one race that maybe wasn’t quite as good as they would have liked.  This made the results even closer, with four teams being tied for fifth place and five teams being only separated by one point.  Team Aspery, Savage, and Dieball were able to maintain their first, second and third places, respectfully.  Team Bradley moved into fourth place and Team Sanderson won the tie breaker to receive fifth place.

A hot chili lunch was prepared, as the boats were being put away.   Following lunch, trophies were presented to the top five finishers.

Hopefully, all who attended went away satisfied having had seven great races and plenty of good food.  We missed all those who could not make it this year and a hope to see all of you next year.

Mohican Haphazard September 8, 2012 – Gary Rickel – Race Chair

The races began with typical (?) Mohican winds in the 10 to 20 knot range.  The wind continued for the first four races from the Northwest with just enough shifting to keep the skippers and crews on their toes. The race committee had to shift the course 15 degrees west for the fifth and final race.  Fleet captain Tom Wills withdrew prior to the first race after breaking a weld on the gooseneck between his mast and boom.

First race: It was Marion Zaugg with crew Joe Minerd and Barb Joudrey first around followed closely by Jeff Jones with crew Jeff Clark.  Next was Kevin Bracy with crew Ron Gall.  At mark two after a spinnaker run the lineup changed to Zaugg and Jones in close battle. By the third mark it was Jones 50 seconds ahead of Zaugg. Then downwind Team Zaugg gave everyone a lesson in flying the spinnaker. Team Zaugg crossed the line first followed by Team Jones, and Bill Sanderson with crew Mike Stratton and Cara Bown, Team Sanderson having made up a great deal of distance in the last run.

Race two:  Winds were in the 20 knot range dropping after the start to a steady 12 knots.  Team Sanderson was over early.  At the first mark it was Zaugg then Jones followed by Kevin Bracy and then by Bill Regan with crew Drew Regan close in fourth position.  By the second mark Zaugg stretched his lead over Jones to 40 seconds.  The pack followed 10 seconds later. Ditto on the third mark then Zaugg pulled ahead on the run and finished a full two minutes ahead of Jones followed by Sanderson, Regan, and Wilson.

Race three:  Winds were at 20 knots at the start soon reducing to 10.5 knots.  Jones rounded the first mark followed by Zaugg and Regan.  At the second mark is Zaugg followed by Tim Parker with crew Will Parker right on Zaugg’s stern after running the entire downwind leg  without spinnaker. During the windward leg Dan Reiber and crew Mike Stencel and Pete Wills took on a bit of water but were able to recover with some fancy bailing.  The finish showed Zaugg, Jones , Regan  and Parker.

Race four:  Again heavy winds dropping after the start. Tight start with Bracy having to do a 720. At the first mark it was Zaugg, Jones, Sanderson, and Regan with the pack in close pursuit.   On the following spinnaker run the Team Zaugg had their boat on the longest plane that this sailor has ever seen.  Results Zaugg, Jones, Regan, Sanderson and Don Wilson with crew Thane Morgan in close fifth.

Race 5:  10 knots. With some mishaps (a train wreck) at the start there were some720’s with Jamey Fisher on 1040 with crew Bill Kotys and Ann Jones dropping out.  The balance of the race was a remake of the past four with Zaugg, Jones, Regan, Sanderson, and Wilson finishing in the top five places

Hot to Trot 2012 Results

Absolutely a beautiful day of sailing at Portage YC.  Please see the results below.  By the way for those in attendance the award presentation was very memorable, and if you want to know more about it – I’d say show up next year!  Ty Cathey and Jeff Hartlep did a great job.

Nationals 2012 Day1 Report

The Interlake Class is alive and well.  The competitors came to the great venue, North Cape Yacht Club, this morning to a mild westerly breeze.  Soon rain set in and we were delayed onshore till after lunch.  We finally headed out on to the big lake, Lake Erie, and then bobbed around for a long time, while the race committee ordered up some wind.

The first race was won by Jim Ward who went out to the left and just climbed up on the entire fleet.  The conditions in this race were in the 5 mph range.  Skip Dieball was second and Surge Vanderhorst was third.

In the second race the wind was in the mid to upper teens.  Basically the wind just kept building throughout the race.  Again Jim Ward lead the way and yes again he went left.  Skip Dieball was close behind in second and Steve Aspery finished third.

Pig Roast, a great local band and beverages was on the evening agenda.

Lastly I would like to say its been a pleasure serving as the Interlake Class president this past year.  Brad Huntley was elected president, Fritz Everson as vice president and Ron Gall as secretary / treasurer.

Stay tuned for the next two days of sailing!!!!

2012 George Fisher Memorial Regatta

Father’s Day weekend and the Hoover George Fisher Memorial Regatta are a perfect combination.  Day 1 was sunny and hot with winds “primarily” from the southeast at 5-7 mph (though sometimes the wind was 1 mph!).  The windward mark was set around 175 degrees but clocked hard to the east many times which made for interesting sailing.  Racing was tight all weekend.  The top boats where finishing usually seconds from each other, which made for great one design racing.  Day 2 the wind machine was cranking.  We had a strong southerly wind around 195 degrees.  The wind speeds were daily between 12-14 mph and some gusts close to 20 mph.

Congratulations to Scott and Rick Savage on winning the regatta.  Ernie and Jacqueline Dieball were second and Jeff Jones and Will Jacquinde were third.  In fourth was Steve and David Aspery and in fifth was Jamie Jones and Joe Hurst.  Final results are in a link below.

2012 Sandusky Results

Seventeen Interlake teams and twenty six Thistle teams competed in this years SSC One Design Regatta which was run in conjunction with the Thistle Lake Erie District Championship.  This years event featured two separate race courses with their own respective RC’s plus 20+ on water volunteers ensuring the racing went off without a hitch.  In a change from the previous years format, this years event featured two days of racing, with a fantastic BBQ dinner on Saturday evening, and a special celebration where the replica of Interlake #1 was launched for the very first time.  Mike Muhn and company who have tireless worked on the boat for the last few years organized a 50/50 raffle to raise money for the project.  The winner of the “Guess The Weight of Interlake #1″ contest was Kevin Bracy, who graciously donated his half of the winnings to the club.  A short presentation was held during the launching, where Bob Reynolds was honored with a Interlake Lifetime membership, and received a beautiful plaque created by Terry Kilpatrick for all of his efforts in spearheading this incredible project.  Once completed, the replica of Interlake #1 will permanently be on display at the Maritime Museum in Sandusky.

Sailors were greeted on Saturday with fantastic conditions with sunny skies and winds in the 8-15 knot range.  Three races were sailed on saturday with Scott Savage and crew Jeff Jones holding a two point lead over team Ward (Jim and Jayme) and a four point lead over team Fisher (Matt and Lisa).  Ernie Dieball with wife Jackie as crew in fourth, and Interlake newcomer Charles Vanderhorst with crew James Keane rounding out the top five after the first day of racing.  The fleet was greeted on Sunday morning to light winds and flat water (plus the occasional power boat chop) for the last two races.  Team Fisher showed off their speed and boat handling in the lighter conditions winning both races on Sunday.  When the dust settled, Savage and Jones were able to take the title by a single point over team Fisher with team Ward rounding out the top three.  Beautiful half hull trophies which were built by Terry Kilpatrick and Dave Miller were awarded to the top three boats.  Great food, fantastic weather, and exceptional racing highlighted a tremendous weekend on Sandusky Bay.  SSC is already looking forward to hosting the 2013 SSC One Design Regatta and the 2013 Interlake National Championships.  A tremendous thank you is extended to Chief Measurer Clark Chapin who drove down to Sandusky on Sunday afternoon to conduct pre-Nationals measurement after the races.

Chief’s 2012 Results

On May 5, Interlakers were welcomed to Leatherlips yacht Club by a dripping fog and a Cinco de Mayo taco lunch. After lunch the drizzle stopped and the northeast wind kicked up to the top end of the predicted five to ten. Significant gusts kept things interesting, frequently chasing sailors to the high side.

Picture of Scott Savage and Jeff Jones way out in front.

Scott Savage jumped ahead early and cruised to wins in the first two races. A strong gust took Scott’s father, Gary, by surprise and took his boat over in the second race. After a couple attempts to get upright, he retired and also missed the third race. In that third race, Scott Savage found himself  buried at the line and spent the race working back up through the fleet for a fifth place finish. Ernie Dieball crossed the line first in the day’s final race.

Sunday morning found Savage in first place with seven points, Dieball right behind with eight points, and Steve Aspery, on the strength of two second place finishes on Saturday, also with eight points. Aspery had another strong race, finishing second again – but Savage won the race and the regatta. Full results are below.

Cherry Blossom 2012 Results

Well the 2012 Cherry Blossom – Midwinters ISCA Championship was a huge success.  We had 18 Interlake boats sail the regatta.  Special thanks goes out to Martin Howell and Doug Savage for organizing this event.  It was great to see everyone and quite a special treat to sail in our nation’s capital.

Bill Smith and myself, Mike McClinchie, drove into Washington D.C. from Columbus with the Kilpatrick’s on Thursday.  Terry and Karen were pulling the newest Interlake 1428 for Skip Dieball.  On Friday Bill and I went out for cruise on the Potomac River for a couple hours.  We saw Marine One flying practice runs and saw the US Capitol, Washington Monument and Jefferson Memorial.  Friday night we had a about 55 people show up for dinner in Alexandria.

Saturday racing was fantastic.  We had sunny skies, temperatures in the mid seventies and winds from the south at 10-12mph with gusts a little higher.  The sailing was tight all day long.  From my vantage point in the middle of the fleet it seemed like the downwind legs is where the top of the fleet pulled away.  Downwind many sailors were banging the left side corner, but I recall twice when Skip Dieball and Paul Abdullah went way right and made out quite well and even did some surfing off a huge wake.

In all we had five races on Saturday and due to inclement weather no racing on Sunday.  Skip and Paul who traded off at the helm were very consistent and sailed amazing. They had 4 bullets out of 5 races.  The top five in order were;

  1. Skip and Paul Abdullah
  2. Steve and Lisa Aspery, Jamie Jones
  3. Scott and Rick Savage
  4. AJ Savage, two nephews ??
  5. Jeff Clark, Tim Cullenen and Kristen C.

2011 Poltergeist Regatta

Final Results

Seventeen Interlakes from five clubs enjoyed a great weekend of fall sailing as the 2011 edition of the Poltergeist Regatta was held the first weekend of October.  The fall leaves were in full color and the Saturday temperatures were ideal with the Sunday temperatures rising as the morning progressed.

The wind forecast for Saturday was 10-15, with gusts to twenty.  The Poltergeist made his presence known was again this year.  He provided gusty conditions that spanned the complete wind range.  His gusty conditions even caused two boats to go over.

Our PRO, Steve Roeschlein, setup two lap windward-leeward courses.  He used as much of the north end of the lake as possible.  However, due to the wind being out of the northwest, the racing legs were a little shorter than normal.  However, this allowed him to start five races on Saturday afternoon.  This provided for several close finishes, as was most of the racing all day.

After the first day of racing the top five were as follows: Scott and Lynn Savage, with Jeff Clark, Tim Lohner and Cara Sanderson Brown in second, followed by Mike McClinchie, Bill Smith and crew Steve Aspery.  In fourth place was Jeff Jones and Will Jaquinde followed closely by Bob and Betsy Bradley and Darek Kizym in fifth.

After a warm shower, the competitors enjoyed appetizers, our traditional State Fair Pork Chop dinner and desert.  Our new ISCA Class President, Mike McClinchie, then presented those in attendance with a class update.

The Sunday morning chill quickly warmed as the sun appeared and burned off the fog.  The breezes grew to about six knots.  This provided the PRO the opportunity to setup and complete two more windward-leeward courses.  The top five teams did not change but the standings did.

As the boats were being put away, a chili lunch was being prepared.  Following lunch, was the trophy presentation.  The first place trophy went to Scott Savage who maintained his lead.  With his first place finish in the first race Sunday morning, Jeff Jones was able to move up to second place. Mike and his crew were able to maintain their third place standings.  Bob was able to move up to fourth and Jeff Clark finished fifth a bad start in the first race Sunday morning.

Hopefully, all who attended went away satisfied having had seven great races and plenty of good food.  We missed all those who could not make it this year and a hope to see all of you next year.

2011 Mohican Haphazard

Congratulations to Marion Zaugg and Seth Parker for winning the 2011 Mohican Haphazard Regatta.

final results

16 boats came out for Mohican Sailing Club’s Haphazard Regatta September 10 with six members and ten visitors.  Winds were light and variable with a threat of thunderstorms.  Stewart Fitzgibbon set a gated windward leeward course for a NNW wind.  The first race took more than an hour and a half to complete with several wind (what wind?) shifts during the race.  At one point we found ourselves tacking to get upwind to the leeward gate and several times we were left wondering whether we were moving at all.  At the start of the second race, we heard thunder and the winds began to pick up. Our race judge had brought his iPad on board the committee boat and was able to determine that the thunder was passing a fair bit to the north.  There was a steady rain for most of the race, however with the rain came the wind and we had the best racing of the day.  The third race was back to light and variable having shifted a little more to the west.  What was that scum at the windward mark, anyhow? I don’t think I saw a single boat that didn’t have a long black stripe along the length of the hull.  At the start of the fourth race we had some barging that resulted in a monumental log jam at the start.  Winds were extremely light so there was no damage in spite of the fact that many of the boats made contact with each other.  One protest was filed but later withdrawn.  An interesting side note on the fourth race. Dan Reiber was sailing on a borrowed 1132 which was missing a spinnaker halyard.  Dan attributed his 2nd place standing in the fourth race to the fact that he was not using a spinnaker and was therefore able to better respond to the windshifts in the light air.

2011 Hot to Trot

Portage Yacht Club – 2011 Hot to Trot

Pictures - http://www.ms-pyc.com/sailing/results/2011_racing/htt/photo_gallery/index.htm

August 27th at Portage YC was absolutely beautiful.  Hurricane Irene was wrecking havoc on the east coast but southern Michigan had sunny skies and temperatures in the high 70′s.  At noon the only thing missing was wind.  By 1pm the wind started to fill in from the north and the PRO sent us out to get some sailing in.

At Portage you need to remember to clear your board and rudder periodically of see weed or pay the consequences.  Team Aspery (Steve and David) had two bullets in the first two races.  In the last race Team Savage (Scott and Lynn) got across the line first.  Overall the top three went;

1.  Scott and Lynn Savage

2. Steve and David Aspery

3. Bill O’Donnel and Brian Hawkins

Final Results

Thanks to Fleet 22 for a great regatta.  The fleet is always so friendly and welcoming.

2011 Interlake National Champion – Matt Fisher

Final Results

The AP flag went up at 9.30 am and remained up until 12.30pm,when three horns were blasted bring our national championship to a close.  After the boats were put away we had a blast enjoying the BLYC pool and poolside “beverage station”!  BLYC is the only club on the Interlake circuit with a pool!  Sure would be nice to see some other clubs get pools.

Matt Fisher sailing with Stu Fisher and Brett Freeman won the 2011 Interlake National Championship.  Matt Fisher and his crew sailed an awesome regatta.  At the awards banquet Matt continued to show his class, thanking BLYC, giving props to the hard work done by Stu and Brett, and acknowledging the amazing talent and skill of the competitors.  Congratulations and well done Matt, Stu and Brett!!!!

Well more writes up to follow on 2011 Interlake Nationals Regatta.  Stay tuned..

2011 Interlake Nationals – July 29th

Third day of Interlake Nationals was outstanding both on and off the water.  The breeze for the first race was in 5-10 mph range out of the west.  The remaining three races had wind out of the west-southwest between 15-20 mph with gusts a little higher.

The Championship fleet had three different winners in the 4 races today.  The racing was tight, fast and most of all a blast.  After the boats were put away for the day many competitors spent the late afternoon poolside at the BLYC pool.  We have one more day of sailing and our annual banquet and awards later in the day.

2011 Interlake Nationals – July 28th

Second day of the Interlake National Regatta.    Today the Championship Division and Challenger Division got under way.  If you were at BLYC today, you already know what a great day we had on and off the water.  The wind at the start of the first race was around 8 mph and increased quickly to about 15 mph with gusts to 18 mph.  We have 25 boats competing in the Championship Division and 11 boats in the Challenger Division.

There are so many story lines from the racing today I am not sure where to begin, and plus I have to get up in six hours again and it do all over again!!  My only commentary is the Buckeye Lake Yacht Club Burger is AWESOME.  I honestly don’t make commissions on each burger sold, but seriously you gotta try one.

2011 Interlake Nationals – July 27th

Interlake Nationals began on July 27th at Buckeye Lake Yacht Club (BLYC).  First a great big thank you to the host fleet #40 and host club BLYC.  The local support at BLYC has been fantastic.  Future result postings will follow on the class website, and the next Intercom, Class newsletter, will include a full report.

On July 27th we had the Women’s Championship and Junior Championship.  The wind conditions were slight and variable under very sunny skies.  As the day went on he wind continued to lay down.  The race committee did a great job to get in one race.

Indian Lake 2011

Indian Lake YC as always was a fabulous host for their two day regatta.  We all arrived to sunny skies and temperatures in the mid 80′s.  The temperatures on Saturday got up to 90 degrees.  Let’s just say we had light wind from multiple directions but primarily out of the south.  We had a shortened course with a downwind finish.  In the end Scott Savage finished first after nearly 90 minutes of racing.  Bryan Parker was second followed by Jeff Clark.

On shore we had a blast.  Little kids including some adults were swimming at the beach.  Others were enjoying nice cold beverages.  Dinner of course featured the famous fish fry.

On Sunday the wind was again extremely light.  Steve Apery banged the left side on the upwind leg and was out in front from start to finish.  Bryan Parker was again second and close behind Team Aspery.  Scott Savage finished third.

Overall for the Regatta the top five finishers were;

  1. Scott and Lynn Savage
  2. Bryan and Tiffany Parker
  3. Jeff and Alex Clark
  4. Steve and David Aspery
  5. Jeff Jones and Will Jay

GTYC 2011

Northern Michigan anytime of year is beautiful, but add in sunny skies and temperatures in high 70′s and you have perfection.  Grand Traverse Yacht Club and Fleet 38 hosted the Great White Northern Championship June 25th and 26th.  While sailing on the west bay of Grand Traverse Bay I quickly remembered why I enjoy this venue so much.

Saturday we had varying wind conditions from 0-12 mph.  I learned what happens when you experience a persistent wind shift.  If you know what I mean, then you also know that my compass said I was in great shape heading to the windward mark, but before I knew it I was last around the mark.  If you don’t know what I mean, do a google search on persistent wind shifts.  In the clubhouse after six races Bob Sagan was out in front, followed by Jack Coleman and Jim Menzies.

On Sunday we awoke to glassy like conditions on the bay.  By 10am some thermal winds kicked in and then a mild sea breeze settled in.  The race committee did an excellent job of getting in two races!  Top three places remained unchanged from Saturday after eight races.

It was great to sail and hang out with everyone.  If you missed it, make plans to travel North next year.

George Fisher Memorial 2011

The George Fisher Memorial was again held over father’s day weekend.  We had 24 boats in the event.  Fleet 24 at Hoover SC was a gracious host as always.  We had 5 different boat cross the line first during the regatta.

Saturday afternoon had the AP flag up for a couple hours while a slow moving thunderstorm rolled through central Ohio.  I can not quite recall who, but at one point a sailor was lobbying to go sailing by running around with a wind meter in hopes of persuading the RC to go sailing. Around 3pm the race committee dropped the AP flag.  Easterly winds on Hoover Reservoir usually mean one thing, light and variable, and the southeast wind were definitely light.  In the end Scott Savage and Rick Savage took first place.  Jeff Clark and Rob Moorman finished second followed by Gary Savage and Christie Whitt.

Saturday night the

On Sunday we all arrived at the club to less than 1 knot of wind.  It did not look good for sailing.  Then 9am came and the wind turned on.  We had 5-7 knots out of the south. The race committee did an excellent job managing to run 4 races before 12pm.  In race 2 – Matt Fisher and Amanda Fisher finished first.  In the third race Scott Graham and Matt Givens made it look easy and finished first.  In the fourth race Steve Aspery and David Aspery got out in front and stayed there wire to wire.  In the last race Jeff Jones and crew Will won the race in impressive fashion.  Special congratulations to Jeff Jones, one of two George Fisher Boat Grantees for 2011.

So with five races in the books the throwout written into the sailing instructions became a major factor.  After the tabulations Matt Fisher and daughter Amanda won the regatta.  Well done Team Fisher and very fitting for this team to win this event!

Sandusky One Design 2011

The weather forecast for the 2011 SSC One-Design Regatta looked ominous, which lead to a smaller turn-out then expected.  However, seven Interlake teams arrived on Saturday morning to typical Sandusky Bay conditions, sunny skies, and a fantastic day of racing.  The first two races were held in 12-17 knots of breeze, and the team of Surge & Kathy Vanderhorst showed off their great boat speed and boat handling in the windy and lumpy conditions winning the first two races easily.  Out of town guests Don Wilson with his two sons as crew were also extremely fast in these conditions posting excellent finishes in the big breeze.  The next three races were raced in 5-8 knots of breeze as the wind and waves began to subside as the day went on.  The next three races were closely contested between Surge/Kathy Vanderhorst, Wes Blazer, and his collegiate rock star crew of Rachel Austin, and Jim & Jayme Ward.  The lighter conditions allowed Jim & Jayme Ward to slip by the Vanderhorst team to claim the overall title by a single point.  Wes Blazer and Rachel sailed very well, and took home the hardware for third place.  After racing, drinks and great food were enjoyed at the newly remodeled SSC bar, and beautiful engraved silver plates were awarded to the top three boats in each class.  We are already looking forward to the 2012 event, so please mark the SSC One-Design Regatta on your calendar for next year!

Cattail 2011

Jolly Rogers Sailing Club held the Cattail Regatta on June 4th, 2011.  Fleet 4 did everything right including excellent sailing conditions.  We had nine Interlakes along with other one-design classes participating in the regatta.  Jolly Rogers was also the host to the Junior Travelers Series – Inter-Lake Yachting Association (I-LYA).  It was fantastic to see so many juniors, coaches, parents and families enjoying the great magic of sailing.

The race committee ran three great races.  Sailing conditions again were excellent with sunny skies and temperatures just over 90 degrees.  The Dieball team of  Skip, Laurie and Meghan made it look easy with three bullets.  The Bradley team of Bob Bradley, Betsy Bradley and Jeff Eischen came in second overall with scores of 2, 4 and 2.  The Marriott brothers, Tom and Tim, came in third overall with scores of 3, 6 and 3.

Back on shore the good times kept rolling.  It was nice to hang out with everyone.  Then it was steak time.  I assume some had the chicken, but seriously those steaks were great!

Chiefs 2011

First hats off to Fleet 23 for hosting yet another memorable, “shifty” and fun Chiefs Regatta at Leatherlips Yacht Club (LYC).  We had twenty-two boats at this year’s event.  The wind this year did not disappoint.  We had great wind velocity in all four races (three races Saturday and one race Sunday) and a ton of wind shifts throughout the event.  The race committee did an excellent job both days.

The racing was tight all weekend with a lot of good battles throughout the fleet.  Scott Savage and his brother Rick Savage had three bullets on Saturday.  That evening while enjoying some beverages on the deck at LYC there a couple themes as sailors recapped the day of sailing; all were very exhausted and sailors kept saying boats ahead would get a big puff or lift, but they never saw it.  True to Leatherlips lure, you had to sail the wind you had, sail the wind bouncing of the trees, and attempt to keep in phase with the wind shifts.  On Sunday Steve Aspery, Dave Aspery and Connor Smith showed everyone how it was done and landed the last bullet of the event.

2011 Midwinters (Davis Island YC – Tampa, FL)

See picture Gallery (and select mid winters category)
This year’s Midwinters had every type of wind condition which surely tested the competitors skills.  We had warm weather, good food, and a wonderful venue in Davis Island YC.  Sailors in attendance:
1402 – skipper Steve Aspery with David Aspery and Connor Smith.
1424 – skipper Mike McClinchie with Bill Smith and Bruce Courts.
730 – skipper Jim Milliman and Lou Ridriguez.
472 – skipper Ron Herbig and Joy Dorethy.
Friday was blowing upper teens to low twenty in knots.  Just 1402 and 1424 went out.  Team Asery had two bullets.
Saturday had decent breeze early.  As the morning progressed under sunny skies the temperature rose to the mid 70′s.  The first race two races had decent wind.  Our third race was shortened in the second windward leg under very light wind conditions.   The RC sent us back to shore for a couple hours. The sea breeze filled in from the west but with shifty conditions the RC was unable to send us off.  Team Aspery had three bullets this day.
Sunday again had nice morning breeze for the first race.  The last race of the regatta was extremely light and shifty.  In the end Team McClinchie crossed the line first by about a boat length with Team Milliman and Team Aspery crossing seconds later.
Final standings were Aspery, McClinchie, Milliman and Herbig.
Next event Chiefs Regatta at Leatherlips YC April 30th and May 1st.
