US Sailing Clinic – Portage YC

We are excited to announce that on June 16, two US Sailing Racing Clinics will be hosted by Portage Yacht Club: one for Interlake and Flying Scot sailors led by Frank Ustach and a second clinic for Laser sailors led by Matthew Clark. Frank and Matt are both US Sailing Level 2 certified instructors. The two clinics will run concurrently, are intended for sailors with intermediate to advanced level experience, and include both on- and off-water activities. The clinics are open to all sailors–not just PYC members.

Registration: https://secure.ussailing.org/ussis/register/index.asp?eventid=590176
Deadline: May 26
Cost: $70 for US Sailing Members; $110 for non-US Sailing Members
Details:
Laser sailors will register as individual sailors. Interlake and Flying Scot sailors may register as teams of 2 or 3 or as individuals (individuals will be teamed up for on-water exercises).
As you register, you will have an opportunity to suggest topics or skills you would like to focus on in the clinic. Frank and Matt will take these into consideration as they develop a customized curriculum for the day.
Off-lake sailors may bring their own boat or inquire about borrowing one from a club member (contact Elona Van Gent at eevege@gmail.com to make that request).

President’s Letter April 2012

Since spring is here and many are either sailing or beginning to think about sailing, I thought I would take a moment to remind everyone about safety. Before setting sail please take the time to ensure you have the following safety gear: life vests for all passengers, throwable life preserver, bail bucket(s), anchor, and the appropriate clothing. Remember you need to dress for the water temperature not just the air temperature! I also recommend you take some extra time to inspect your hardware on your boat. Pay close attention to the shrouds and look for fraying. Replace worn ring dings and tighten any loose screws. Before hitting the road also give some attention to your trailer. Do the lights work, what is the condition of the wheels, tires and hubs?

Our showcase event, Interlake Nationals, is at North Cape Yacht Club (NCYC) as many of you already know. I can tell you the folks at NCYC are hard at work, to host a great event. I am truly pumped for this event. Please make plans to participate, you won’t regret it. Our Nationals is July 18th through July 21st. At www.interlakesailing.org/racing/nationals/ you will find a plethora of information. The notice of race (NOR), registration form, merchandise form, housing information is already posted at this site. Get your registration in early. Registrations are due by July 1st (you can register after July 1st but a $50.00 late fee will apply). Please check the web address for the latest and greatest for our 2012 Interlake Nationals at North Cape Yacht Club.

Lastly I wanted to discuss boat measurement as it pertains to our National Regatta. The Interlake Executive Board in conjunction with the Interlake Boat Measurement Committee approved a mandate to create a detailed measurement database record for every boat. Therefore for 2012 the ISCA is requiring all boats to get recertified. National pre-measurement (boats only) will be at the Cattail on June 2nd (Jolly Roger SC), Sandusky One Design on June 10th (Sandusky SC) and the George Fisher Memorial on June 17th (Hoover SC). Finally on Wednesday July 18th from 9am to 6pm, both boat and sail measurement will be available at North Cape YC. We want to make measurement as convenient as possible for everyone and hope these additional measurement opportunities help out.

Update 2/17/12

Three more features of the upcoming Cherry Blossom Regatta/Interlake Midwinters to share with you….
First, for those who will be in town Friday evening (4/20/2012), we will get together for dinner and to reunite with friends we haven’t seen all winter.  Please join us at 7:00 pm at Austin Grill located at 801 King Street in the Old Town section of Alexandria.  Dinner and drinks is on your own nickel, but this will be a good opportunity for some of us to get together before the regatta.  Austin Grill has a nice selection of inexpensive Tex-Mex cuisine, a kids menu, a gluten-free menu, and tasty cocktails.  If you plan to attend, please let Martin Howell know so we can give the restaurant a rough idea of how many people to expect.
Second, be on the look at for email from Ron Gall, ISCA Secretary, for a special opportunity at this regatta.
Third, we have reserved a block of 20 rooms at the Sheraton Suites Old Town Alexandria.
The rooms are reserved under the group “Interlake”.  The rate is $139/ night before tax and there is a $20/person charge starting with the third person.  These rooms will be held until March 20th, so act soon.  Many hotels in the area are already booked solid.  This hotel is less two miles from the marina.  You can book these rooms starting on Feb. 24th.  You can book a room via the phone or an online link that I will post back on this page on the 24th.  Check in time is 3pm.   The rooms are reserved from 4/19 – 4/22, but individuals can change the dates as needed.

Update 1/17/2012

Well, ISCA President Mike McClinchie called us this winter and asked if Fleet 39 would be interested in hosting an early-spring regatta……and we couldn’t say ‘NO.’  So we’d like to invite all of you to participate in the 2012 Cherry Blossom Regatta hosted by Daingerfield Island Sailing Club and Interlake Fleet #39 in Alexandria, Virginia.  The regatta will be held April 21-22, 2012 out of Washington Sailing Marina and is a part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival.  Racing on the Potomac River will include Interlake racing on Saturday and Sunday, and keelboat racing on Saturday only.  We will offer you something a little different than what you are accustomed to by using race courses set around fixed government navigation marks.  You’ll also get to test your abilities of dealing with tide and river current (not to worry…the locals haven’t figured it out yet either).  After the racing on Saturday, a post-race party will take place at the marina.  On Sunday we’ll get an early start so we can get a few races in, and get done early for those travelling back home.  This is a great way to get you and your boat tuned up for the 2012 Interlake sailing season!  And best of all, there is no entry fee so all you have to do is show up, sail and enjoy yourself.

Besides the sailing there is plenty to do off the water.  Leave early to come to the regatta or stay a few extra days and enjoy the many attractions the Washington, DC metropolitan area has to offer.  2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the city of Tokyo’s gift of 3,000 cherry blossom trees to the United States as a symbol of friendship.  The centennial festivities offer many family friendly activities throughout late March and most of April.  Many museums and attractions abound in the area, and offer something of interest to everyone.  Below are several links to some of the more popular area attractions.

If you have any questions, need suggestions on things to do besides sailing, or just want to let us know you are planning to attend, please contact Martin Howell at interlake1395@gmail.com or (703) 862-1459.  We’re working on a few other shoreside activities and will let you know more information as those details develop.  We look forward to welcoming you to our quirky little river.

Boat Grant Program 2012

Our boat grant program was created to honor George Fisher, who was a great ambassador to the sport of sailing.  We had a very successful 2011 grant program.  Jeff Jones sailed 1320 and Dan Brainard sailed our other grantee boat 1066.  Jeff Jones had an extremely successful 2011 season both at his home club, Hoover Sailing Club (HSC), and on road as part of the ISCA Traveler Series.  Jeff won the HSC overall Interlake Club Championship and most recently finished second at the Poltergeist Regatta.

The deadline for applications for 2012 is March 31, 2012.

Our boat grant program is one of the most exciting things going on in the ISCA!

2011 Fall Blowout

Attention:  Fall Blowout @ North Cape YC has been cancelled for Oct-15 due to extremely high wind forecast.  Please stay tuned for more information.

Cherry Blossom Regatta 2012

When:

The event will be a 2-day regatta from April 21st-22nd which is an official event of the Washington DC Cherry Blossom Festival.  In 2011 this regatta was a one-day Regatta sailing by PHRF boats and Lightnings.  The Interlakes will be a great addition to this regatta.

This could be a great get away weekend with your family and or racing crew.

What about Midwinters:

ISCA Executive Board is planning to have our next midwinter’s regatta in 2013, and continue on an every other year basis.  Thus this newly created Cherry Blossom Regatta will be a great way to kickoff the ISCA Traveler Series in 2012.  The Cherry Blossom Regatta will be Potomac River SA annual regatta (thus the ISCA will eliminate the PRSA Memorial Day Regatta from the Travel Series schedule).

More information to follow on lodging opportunities with local sailors.

Goat:

Goal to get 20+ boats.

Participation:

Out of Town Skippers Committed to going: Steve Aspery, Scott Savage, Skip Deiball, Ernie Deiball, Kevin Bracy, Alan Freeland, Mike McClinchie and YOU!!!!

Questions:

We will communicate more information in the coming months.  In the meantime please Contact Mike McClinchie at mike1424@me.com or 614.330.1033.   Eventually we will post a local contact person as well.

2011 National Pictures
