2012 Sandusky Results

Seventeen Interlake teams and twenty six Thistle teams competed in this years SSC One Design Regatta which was run in conjunction with the Thistle Lake Erie District Championship.  This years event featured two separate race courses with their own respective RC’s plus 20+ on water volunteers ensuring the racing went off without a hitch.  In a change from the previous years format, this years event featured two days of racing, with a fantastic BBQ dinner on Saturday evening, and a special celebration where the replica of Interlake #1 was launched for the very first time.  Mike Muhn and company who have tireless worked on the boat for the last few years organized a 50/50 raffle to raise money for the project.  The winner of the “Guess The Weight of Interlake #1″ contest was Kevin Bracy, who graciously donated his half of the winnings to the club.  A short presentation was held during the launching, where Bob Reynolds was honored with a Interlake Lifetime membership, and received a beautiful plaque created by Terry Kilpatrick for all of his efforts in spearheading this incredible project.  Once completed, the replica of Interlake #1 will permanently be on display at the Maritime Museum in Sandusky.

Sailors were greeted on Saturday with fantastic conditions with sunny skies and winds in the 8-15 knot range.  Three races were sailed on saturday with Scott Savage and crew Jeff Jones holding a two point lead over team Ward (Jim and Jayme) and a four point lead over team Fisher (Matt and Lisa).  Ernie Dieball with wife Jackie as crew in fourth, and Interlake newcomer Charles Vanderhorst with crew James Keane rounding out the top five after the first day of racing.  The fleet was greeted on Sunday morning to light winds and flat water (plus the occasional power boat chop) for the last two races.  Team Fisher showed off their speed and boat handling in the lighter conditions winning both races on Sunday.  When the dust settled, Savage and Jones were able to take the title by a single point over team Fisher with team Ward rounding out the top three.  Beautiful half hull trophies which were built by Terry Kilpatrick and Dave Miller were awarded to the top three boats.  Great food, fantastic weather, and exceptional racing highlighted a tremendous weekend on Sandusky Bay.  SSC is already looking forward to hosting the 2013 SSC One Design Regatta and the 2013 Interlake National Championships.  A tremendous thank you is extended to Chief Measurer Clark Chapin who drove down to Sandusky on Sunday afternoon to conduct pre-Nationals measurement after the races.
